Coral reefs play a vital role as ecosystems that support a diverse range of marine life, functioning as nurseries for fish, providing coastal erosion protection, and making substantial contributions to global biodiversity. Coral reefs also contribute to 50% of the world’s oxygen supply. Unfortunately, these delicate ecosystems are currently confronting varying challenges, including the impacts of rising sea temperatures, pollution, and overfishing, resulting in widespread coral bleaching and degradation.
Recognizing the urgency of this situation, Dubai has undertaken a dedicated mission to restore and conserve its coral reefs. Through collaborative efforts involving the government, environmental organisations, researchers, and local communities, innovative projects have been initiated to revive and safeguard these critical ecosystems.
The Dubai Reef Project, born out of a broader commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation, aims to rejuvenate and protect the city’s coral reefs. Given the substantial threats posed by climate change, overfishing, and pollution to these delicate ecosystems, Dubai has proactively implemented measures to reverse the damage and ensure a healthier marine environment for future generations.
Central to the Dubai Reef Project are coral nurseries, serving as incubators for coral fragments and providing a controlled environment for their growth. Strategically placed in areas most affected by coral degradation, these nurseries foster the regrowth of damaged reefs. As well as this, Dubai has pioneered the deployment of artificial reefs as a key component of the Reef Project. These structures not only serve as platforms for coral attachment but also offer shelter to a variety of marine species.
Positioned strategically, artificial reefs aim to enhance biodiversity and establish resilient ecosystems capable of withstanding environmental challenges. The project aims to exceed 40,000 cubic meters in volume, covering an area of 600 square kilometres, and is estimated to have the capacity to capture more than 7 million cubic meters of carbon annually.
